‘Live’ Photography

For this blog entry I did some video work with the aim to broaden my skill set. After my first video I began thinking of ideas for A. my blog post for this month B. what content I would like to produce for my channel. Originally I was to make another post about some film photography I had conducted in the later part of January / the early end of February but it fell through with my local shop not offering a developing service during lockdown.

So my inspiration was teased out of me via two means. The first being the film photographer George Muncey, better known by his online alias as Negative Feedback on YouTube. Recently George when conducting his videos has been filming and composing scenes as if they where photographs. I find this fitting to George’s work and in fact what I’m trying to instil into my own work, of taking time and focusing on the composition lighting, and all the other gubbins, something film photography is very influential on as a photographer. So Ive translated this idea into video, creating a ‘live photograph’ effect. It isn’t by any means a feature film, with lots of action but that’s the very thing I am trying to avoid in this video, instead I believe I have drawn richer atmosphere with subtle, gentle, calming movements out of my work.

For this I deliberately avoid heavy human interference as I believe to destroy the calming tranquil nature of the video. Where I believe this to be true of the videography itself, the same attitude cannot be applied to the audio. The vast majority of the clips audio feature disruptive sounds of for example me breathing, clear voices, wind distortion, and one moving about keeping warm in the cold weather. I believe with better audio equipment this could easily be achieved, however I do not yet posses Microphones of such nature but will definitely be a consideration as I grow my YouTube channel. In replacement for the original audio I’ve added some non-intrusive music, it isn’t a worthy supplement however it is better than no audio at all.

Alongside the video I have added some more unrelated photos to my “Digital photography” page of which some are featured above.
